Beloveds, selecting any vendor for your wedding is serious business, and selecting your florist is no exception. If you’ve spent any time managing a team, you know that when engaging someone to perform work for you, you want to be able to rest assured that he or she is performing the job they’re hired to do efficiently and effectively.
Educating is key
First of all, is your florist helpful? Not just is he or she helpful in getting you a contract and taking your credit card information - ha - but really, does he or she take the time to educate you on floral design and the wedding planning process? I would argue that a good florist takes the time to make sure you fully understand the in’s and out’s of floral design. I’m not talking about the technical intricacies, of course, but instead enough information to help you fill in the gaps and fully understand how the entire process works. And a truly stellar florist starts planting these seeds of knowledge even before you’re their client.
Bringing the vision to life
A very obvious part of selecting a florist is assessing whether he or she can execute your floral design vision at all. A good starting place for making this assessment, is looking at the florist’s body of work. Does their style somewhat mirror what you envision for your day? How does the florist describe their signature style? Does the florist even have a signature style? Spoiler alert - look carefully at a florist who says he or she can ‘do anything’. It’s kind of like a caterer who says they can do all types of cuisine. I’m not saying it isn’t possible to be a master of Pakistani and Soul food, but it’s probably not likely.
Even bigger than photos of what they’ve done, be sure to pay attention to how the florist describes your floral vision back to you. Is he or she proposing designs for natural and minimalist when you specifically asked for romance and whimsical? Afterall, what are pretty flowers if they aren’t THE pretty flowers YOU want, right?
Responsiveness
Reliability and consistency matter too, beloveds. The ideal florist is responsive and shows up when you need him or her to. Now, to be clear, this doesn’t mean the florist is available at your beck and call every waking moment of the day. They’re running a business after all and probably have multiple clients who they’re trying to give a first-class experience to. To me, reliability and responsiveness means when they schedule a time to connect, they consistently follow through and show up for the prospective and current clients. They don’t miss appointments (without a really compelling reason!), and they respond to inquiries within a reasonable amount of time.
Is it a good fit
My last bit of advice when selecting a florist? The good ‘ole fashioned likeability factor. Seriously, do you like them? At the end of the day, personality matters, and if you’re at all like me, you want to spend your hard earned money with someone you genuinely like. Does that mean I need to be friends with them after the experience? No, not at all. But is he or she a kind person? Do they treat their team well? Do they seem to have integrity and operate their business ethically and honestly? Do you feel at ease with them? Maybe they make you smile a little. Remember, planning a wedding means you’ll likely have at least a couple interactions with your florist, so it’s important to ensure this time spent together will be enjoyable.
At the end of the day, who a person is as a vendor is just as important as the quality of the service they provide. Choose wisely - and most importantly - choose who will make this experience one of the best of your life. After all, planning a wedding is hard work and you deserve a team that honors you and this amazing day!
